Jamison Reading Program:  Entering into its second year, the Jamison Reading Program is excited to continue the partnership between Junior League of Bakersfield and the Jamison Children’s Center, a 24 hour protective custody facility.  Being removed from their home and family can be a startling and traumatic experience for children, and, in many cases, children can be housed there anywhere from a few hours to several weeks.  Junior League is honored to be working with the Jamison Center to provide their residents with reading enrichment activities in an effort to foster reading skills and appreciation.  Each month, the committee chooses books to read and discuss with the children.  The experience is engaging and can include discussion, reading aloud, and even dramatic adaptation.  Each child gets to keep a copy of the book of the month, and gets interactive, oftentimes one-on-one, attention from committee members.
